Next GenerationWhen running casing in deep water / subsea applications or in liner deployments, excessive surge pressures in the well bore can occur when drilling fluid in auto-filled casing is forced through the drill pipe landing string to surface.

This presents several historic problems such as reduced casing running speeds, the potential for damaged formations and or well control incidents. To date these have been tackled by existing tools with varying degrees of success.

OILSCO’s Surge Reduction Tool (S.R.T) which utilizes our multi activation piston technology (M.A.P) is run in the landing string above the casing. It mitigates the problem by being able to divert the auto-fill fluid from the string into the annulus via means of a series of ports.

It also has the unique functionality of being able to switch between the “surge reduction” and “circulating” modes as and when and as often as required.  Activated from surface and with minimal lag time, it gives the operator the ability to run casing or circulate through the casing shoe as and when dictated by the well.

The OILSCO Surge Reduction Tool is run in the open position with the ports covered by a floating sleeve, which, as the casing auto-filling occurs, are opened by a small differential pressure created within the tool. They can be closed by activating the M.A.P from surface by means of mud pump pressure; the activation process is capable of cycling the tool rapidly and sequencing repeatedly between modes.

With the tool in the closed position full pressure integrity is restored, allowing the safe handling of well control situations, the ability to circulate through the casing shoe and the confidence that the cement job will proceed as planned.
